Hinterland Operations: Intensified Logistical Activities in northern Illinois

Hinterland Operations: Intensified Logistical Activities in northern Illinois (4:09)

This film documents recent transformations of the northern Illinois landscape, including the following: reintroduction of the American Bison, prairie restoration, ongoing large-scale agricultural production, wind power generation, and construction of intermodal freight facilities to handle increasing levels of containerized freight moving through the region. These processes underscore the limitations of traditional urban classifications, particularly dichotomies such as city/hinterland, urban/rural, and front-stage/back-stage.

This film was shot and produced by MODUS Collective for Hinterlands Urbanism and Landscape's exhibit for the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial.
